Artist's Comments

DESIGN:
I chose John Simm as The Riddler, mainly because as I was researching David Tennat, I found John Simm more intriguing, and after watching some of his performance, I concluded he can pull off almost any incarnation of The Riddler, wether it's a Federal agent gone rogue (popular depiction in fanfics), or the quirky smart guy with a huge ego.

The Rubik cube's colors are white, green and purple. It has "Who is *batman symbol*?" written in it, with square tiles having parts of Batman. He IS wearing a BOWLER HAT, it may not look like it, but he is.

DESCRIPTION:

My version would be of that of a enigmatic character who cites Gordon to a secret meeting, sending him a anonymous note, in which an easy riddle conveys that the sender knows something about the Dent incident, and wants to meet up with Gordon. He is met in the night, in a pier. His face is never seen by Gordon nor by the viewer. He's wearing a green coat, white shirt, black tie, green bowler hat, black gloves, dark gray pants, and black shoes. Although he stands with his back to the sea, his face is impossible to distinguish, just a smirk is exposed.

He shows arrogance in telling Gordon he knows best, and he will find the proof to incriminate both Gordon and Batman, and on top of that, he's gonna find out who Batman is, but that's just for his eyes only *grins*.

or

He can just help them get the next villain in the same way, talking to Gordon anonymously and feeding him information. In either way, I think it would be great having him solving a Rubik cube, and when Gordon and/or Batman decide to get him he properly finishes the Rubik cube and throws it at them showing it's a smoke bomb (which obviously activates when you finish the cube).

LOOK:

His look is inspired by "The Son of Man" by Rene Magritte, which is a man in a bowler hat and suit standing with his face obscured by a green apple.

I find that The Riddler persona might be inspired by that painting, as it plays with the inquisitive desire of man, and Rene Magritte's description of it fuels that:

"Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us."

I had the exact same thoughts about the Magritte painting. VERY Nolan-Riddler to me. Your psychology of the character is really great! I'm working on my own version so this is very inspiring! I LOVE what you did with the bat symbol at the bottom.

Would you mind terribly if I "borrowed" that modified bat symbol somewhere down the line? I'll be sure to link back to you in case I ever use it. I'm just sure it's going to get stuck in my head and I'll probably end up sticking it somewhere; it's just so GREAT!

I'd make him a serial killer, like the zodiac.

In Nolan's world it would go that route.

I don't see how he would go for that route.
